Marriage as a Mutual Ministry

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband." Ephesians 5:31-33

Each time I take my car to get the oil changed, there is always this awkward moment when the mechanic comes to share all the recommendations to improve it. After the diagnosis, I feel a tension that if I say no, then is the mechanic secretly judging me in his head about how I am not taking care of my car? If I say yes, am I getting ripped off?

One of the things that has broken my wife’s, Nikki, and my heart is the number of our friends whose marriages have fallen apart. Many of them are couples who seemed so happy, well at least according to their pictures on social media. But what happened?

The ultimate goal of marriage is to love and respect our spouse in a way that encourages them to grow in their love for God while growing in your love for one another. Marriage is a mutual ministry to one another as you walk through life together. How do you love and respect your spouse in a way that spurs them towards a deeper love for God when life is tough?
