Choose what is Good
I have always been such a Martha! Making lists, checking things off the list, making plans, creating goals, accomplishing tasks great and small and never sitting still has always been my thing. Until now. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m older and tire more easily or if I’ve finally grown wiser in my old age (I hope it’s the latter) but I find much greater satisfaction these days by simply sitting at the foot of my Savior, taking in His Word and resting in His Presence. Like Martha, I have been easily distracted by all of the busyness of this world and neglected the most important thing! In Luke 11:38-42, Jesus is visiting the home of Martha and Mary, and Martha is so distracted with getting things done, that she misses the opportunity to just enjoy being with Jesus. The result is frustration, not satisfaction. She can’t believe that she is doing all of the work while her sister Mary is sitting at the Lord’s feet and listening to His teaching. I love how Jesus addresses her frustration in verses 41-42. But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
We all have a mountain of to-dos on our list every day but Jesus says only one thing is necessary, sitting at His feet and listening to His Word. So, our church has opportunities for both men and women to do just that at our Men’s and Women’s Bible Studies which both start up on February 7!
Men will be studying the Life of David, A Flawed Man After God’s Heart, in the evenings at 7 p.m. The cost is $5 and you can register here.
Women will be studying The Sermon on the Mount by Jen Wilkin. Come and sit at Jesus’ feet on the mountainside as He challenges us to think differently about what it means to be one of His followers and a citizen of the kingdom of heaven. You can register for either the morning (9:30-11:30 a.m.) class or the evening (6:30-8:30 p.m.) class here.
Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the Presence of Jesus and the community of others who are putting their to-do lists aside and choosing what is good!
